One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will release two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to supply fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the art can change drastically between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with a couple maximum releasing each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
